How do you level up jobs? I tried lumbering at trees, but the level bar of the job doesn't increase at all so I'm wondering how to level it up.

You need to do quests to level up your job.
Check the ingame help, it should have all the info you need.

it asked for logs, but where to get them? the ingame help doesnt help me.

You cut trees to get logs.
