+1 on Gaz's first lottery idea

The lottery pot could be used for a jackpot item that changes according to how much money is in the pot - or to prevent envy towards an excessively lucky winner, go into a loot pool to increase the value of crit piles / quality of item drops in monster loot tables instead.
