The reason servers tend to shut down is because the population steadily declines over time. Once it reaches a very low amount, players, GMs, etc, care less and less. If a server was thriving, I'm sure you would see the difference. Unfortunately, a DR server has not thrived in a very long time, so there's no way to demonstrate this.
There is no doubt in my mind that constant PKing has made players quit this game before. "Play The Game"? We should be worried about even one person quitting this game. I've said it before and I'll say it again; DR is dying. I love the game, and I wouldn't change anything about it, except a higher population. It would be so amazing to have hundreds of players actively PKing and fighting in war. Unfortunately, we will never get a higher population at this rate.
Anyone who played DR BR during the time that Kengo was PKing VD is a perfect example. There was a solid couple months where no one could level without being PKed by that character in VD. It tried even my patience, considering the fact that I don't have all the time in the world to play anymore. If I was a 'normal' player, I would definitely have quit during this time instead of wasting my time. What is the point if you cannot progress because some retard decides he will PK every 5 minutes, and the way VD and PK works make it nearly impossible to prevent? Then there was I.R.A. While I didn't have to deal with him, I can only imagine how that was for everyone else.
One of the other problems is also people not wanting to party to favor leveling their tactics so pits would be taken with only 1 or 2 blasters. This should be alleviated a bit on this server though.
There's one easy way to get around this. It was very rare that back in the day people would actually disrupt each other leveling, unless it was 2 really bad rival guilds that actually hunted each other. You want to PK? Keep it in WG Market / North Wanen / Lethe Mounts. There is ALWAYS someone around there that wants to PK too.
Oh and one more vote to no inter-nation partying. I really would like to see this again, if only to see how it works out. I wouldn't mind if it was turned on later when / if population dwindles, but I'd really love to have this removed for now. DR just seemed to 'work' back then, when this was disabled.
"Join the guild that is PKing you." "Get your guild to help you." Etc. What is this logic? I hate to argue when it can be solved by common sense. That's why I hate arguing online, but whatever. Obviously there is a reason the guild is PKing you. Why would they let you join? Also, I really enjoy the mindless "Well if my guildmate tells me to PK him then I will back him up." Really, who are you kidding? Because of the way to community is in DR and how everyone knows each other, everyone knows that people are just LOOKING for an excuse to PK each other. Any excuse, no matter how minuscule. "He asked for help" "He told me so" are pathetic excuses. You are PKing because you want to be. Don't pawn it off on anything else. Your ability to reason is not dispelled upon joining a guild.
To be honest, there is only one way to deal with 'Mafia' guilds. Unfortunately, that way is left up to the players. If something like that happens, it's up to the players to make up their minds on whether or not they want it to continue. Even if there is one big powerful guild, if the rest of the server works towards making their world a living hell, they will eventually seek peace, or quit, or change their ways. The problem is that it is difficult to get people to work together (Hey, I'm not excluding myself from any of this, just stating facts, I'm human too.)
i couldnt agree more on what you said... maybe they could make some rules against excessive pk in some maps to prevent such things.. but i think this rules should be made after server start and after some observation on the behavior ppl will have to adjust what maps generate this problem..
